Resolution on the ukrainian crisis with special offers of assistance for students and researchers
Berlin: At the annual conference of the “Bad Wiesseer Kreis”, the universities of applied sciences (UAS) took a clear stance: They adopted a resolution against the war in Ukraine and linked their statement with concrete offers of help for students, lecturers and researchers. The conference took place on 15th and 16th March in Berlin.
Up to 100,000 refugees from the science sector are expected.
In their statement on the war in Ukraine, the universities of applied sciences expressed their dismay at the ongoing war waged by Russia against the sovereign state of Ukraine in violation of international law. They also expressed their great concern for the lives and wellbeing of the Ukrainian population, students and colleagues at universities and emphasised their solidarity with Ukraine.
The 118 universities of applied sciences organised in the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) see themselves in a position to accept a large number of students and to offer them a timely perspective and, if necessary, an introduction to the German labour market. Additionally, the universities of applied sciences are planning extensive digital support programmes for Ukrainian universities. Specific offers of help for refugees already exist. These are listed on the universities of applied sciences’ official website, unglaublich-wichtig.de.
“It is extremely important to offer help quickly and unbureaucratically to students who have had to flee Ukraine due to the war,” says Prof. Dr. Karim Khakzar, spokesperson for the universities of applied sciences and Vice President of the HRK. “A joint platform should enable prospective students to quickly gain a decent overview of the wide range of programmes offered by Germany’s universities of applied sciences.”
